5. Singular vs Multiple: The Riddle of Numbers
While one might expect that sebaceous adenomas usually appear in a solitary fashion, it’s far from universally true. They can make their grand entrance alone or come in pairs, trios, or even larger ensembles. But what does this numeric variability tell us?
The first inkling one might have when noticing multiple adenomas is a sense of increased concern. The question “Why more than one?” lingers in the air. But it’s worth noting that the number doesn’t necessarily make a situation more complicated or worrisome.
What’s surprising is that this numeric variability doesn’t seem to follow any particular genetic or environmental factors. In other words, having multiple adenomas isn’t the result of some clear-cut causal relationship we can point to. It defies simplistic explanation.
Perhaps it’s their unpredictable number that makes sebaceous adenomas such a subject of medical and scientific intrigue. When multiple adenomas appear, they don’t do so in predictable patterns or even symmetrical arrangements. Each one seems to have its own separate agenda.(5)
