3. Pain – A Prominent Indicator of Nerve Damage
Peripheral neuropathy can also manifest as persistent or episodic pain. Often patients describe this as a stabbing, burning, or freezing sensation. This pain can be disruptive, impacting quality of life and physical function.
The pain is often the result of the body’s confused response to the misfiring of damaged nerves. Essentially, the nerves send pain signals to the brain without any physical cause for the pain, leading to a feeling of discomfort.
Interestingly, some people may experience heightened sensitivity to touch, a condition known as allodynia. This could make even the gentlest touch or pressure feel painful, adding to the discomfort. (3)
