5. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD): The Internal Turmoil
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, commonly referred to as IBD, are a group of disorders causing inflammation of the digestive tract. While Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the poster children for IBD, there are other types too. It’s not just about inflammation. IBD can lead to ulcers, sores, and other complications.
Given the inflammation and potential damage, it’s no surprise that IBD can result in bowel obstruction. Swelling narrows the passage, and over time, scar tissue can form, further impeding the flow of content. While the exact cause of IBD remains elusive, a combination of genetic, immune, and environmental factors are believed to play a role.
IBD’s onset is typically in the younger years, often before 30. But symptoms can emerge at any age. Pain, changes in bowel habits, and weight loss are some of the tell-tale signs. However, the severity can vary from person to person. Some might have mild symptoms, while others experience significant disruptions.
The challenges of living with IBD go beyond physical symptoms. The emotional toll can be significant. Continuous inflammation and the looming threat of complications like obstruction can be daunting. However, understanding the condition and its implications can pave the way for better management. (5)
