2. Swelling and Blisters: Sun’s Intense Aftermath
After a harsh interaction with the sun’s rays, our skin can exhibit alarming physical changes. One of these manifestations is swelling, often accompanied by the formation of blisters. Both are quite telling of the internal turmoil the skin is experiencing. Swelling is like the body’s way of sending reinforcements to a troubled area.
The swollen patches are often tender to touch, and this edema results from fluid accumulation underneath the skin. The presence of fluid offers a cushion of sorts, protecting the skin from further mechanical damage. But, this protective strategy also has its downside. Blisters, filled with a clear liquid, may form over the swollen regions.
These blisters are more than mere liquid-filled bubbles. They are the body’s attempt to create a protective barrier over the damaged skin. This ‘liquid bandage’ prevents further environmental assault, giving the underlying skin a chance to heal. However, as these blisters break, they may leave the skin raw and vulnerable. (2)
