9. Headaches: The Cerebral Response to Sun Overexposure
Among the myriad responses to intense sun exposure, headaches stand out as a cerebral testament to the sun’s potency. A throbbing temple, a tightness around the head, and sensitivity to light are signs that the brain isn’t too pleased with the recent sunbathing escapade.
The reasons behind sun-induced headaches are multifaceted. Dehydration, often a result of prolonged sun exposure, plays a significant role. As the body loses fluids, the brain temporarily contracts, pulling away from the skull, leading to a dehydration headache. Moreover, the eyes, when exposed to bright sunlight, can strain, leading to tension-type headaches.
However, the narrative goes deeper. The very inflammation caused by the sun’s rays on the skin can trigger certain chemicals that make the brain’s blood vessels swell, causing headaches. It’s a ripple effect, starting at the skin and echoing within the confines of the skull.(9)
