14. A Global Concern: Geographical Distribution of Cleft Lips
Cleft lips don’t discriminate, appearing in populations across the world. However, interestingly, there are variations in prevalence based on geography. Asian and Native American populations show higher rates compared to African populations. The reasons? A blend of genetics, environment, and perhaps even diet.
Studies indicate that countries like China and India see a higher incidence of cleft lips. These densely populated nations have been working hard to provide healthcare solutions, given the sheer numbers. Meanwhile, in Africa, while the prevalence is lower, the challenges remain significant due to healthcare infrastructure limitations.
Socio-economic factors also play a role. In developed countries with advanced healthcare, babies born with clefts get timely interventions, minimizing complications. In contrast, those in underdeveloped regions might not receive the care they need due to financial constraints or lack of facilities. (14)
