8. Physical Complications Associated with Cleft Lip
While the aesthetic concerns associated with a cleft lip are often immediately noticeable, the condition’s physical complications extend beyond mere appearance. A cleft lip can sometimes be just the tip of the iceberg.
Breathing challenges are often a primary concern. The misalignment can lead to nasal obstructions or irregularities, sometimes causing chronic respiratory issues. Proper surgical interventions can alleviate these problems, but without treatment, they can be persistent.
Feeding is another domain where complications arise. Infants with a cleft lip might struggle with latching during breastfeeding, leading to nutritional deficiencies. Specialized feeding bottles and nipples are often recommended to counter this.
Ear infections and hearing loss are also more common in children with cleft lips. The Eustachian tube, responsible for draining fluid from the middle ear, might not function optimally. Chronic fluid buildup can lead to hearing impairments.
Dental and orthodontic issues are rife too. Misaligned teeth, malformed or missing teeth, and even jaw growth problems can be associated with cleft lips. These necessitate a multidisciplinary approach involving orthodontists and dental surgeons.(8)
