3. MCC Stage III: Widespread Local Invasion
Entering Stage 3, Merkel-cell Carcinoma takes a more aggressive turn. While the tumor size can vary, what defines this stage is the spread. The cancer has now infiltrated multiple regional lymph nodes, amplifying concerns about its rapid progression.
Patients might notice more than one enlarged, painless lymph node in the region. These nodes, carrying the cancer cells, become pivotal points for MCC’s potential spread to distant organs. The skin changes noted in previous stages might become more pronounced, with increased chances of ulceration or breakdown.
Interestingly, the spread isn’t always symmetrical. One side might show more lymph node involvement than the other. The skin’s appearance, too, can be quite varied, with some areas looking redder and others taking on a bluish hue due to the tumor’s depth and vascular involvement. (3)
