12. Nutrition and IBD: A Double-Edged Sword
Food, a source of sustenance and pleasure, assumes a complex role for those with IBD. It’s a delicate dance of enjoying culinary delights while being wary of potential flare-ups. And yet, nutrition is an integral player in the IBD narrative.
Malnutrition looms large, especially during flare-ups. The gut, already compromised, struggles to absorb vital nutrients, making dietary adjustments essential. On the brighter side, specific foods and supplements can aid in reducing inflammation and promoting gut healing.
But it isn’t all about what one eats; how one eats matters too. Smaller, more frequent meals can ease the digestive burden. Moreover, hydration emerges as a non-negotiable pillar, especially given the dehydration risks posed by diarrhea.
Research is continually evolving, and the list of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods for IBD seems ever-changing. However, one timeless truth remains – a personalized approach. Because in the end, each individual’s gut story is as unique as their fingerprint. (12)
