Cause 4. Nummular Eczema: Circular Patches of Irritation
Nummular eczema, named for its unique coin-shaped lesions, is a more unusual form of eczema. These round patches can appear anywhere on the body, but they’re most commonly found on the arms and legs. They often start as small, itchy spots that later scale over and become crusty.
Triggers for nummular eczema are not fully understood, but dry skin seems to play a significant role. It’s more common in the winter months, when skin tends to be drier, and in individuals with a history of atopic dermatitis. Other potential triggers include insect bites, skin trauma, and exposure to certain metals.
Nummular eczema can be stubborn and difficult to treat, often requiring potent prescription creams to manage. Regular moisturizing and avoiding triggers can also help keep the condition under control. It’s important to note that while the patches may heal over time, they may also recur, making ongoing management necessary. (4)
