Cause 5. Seborrheic Dermatitis: Beyond Dandruff
Seborrheic dermatitis is a type of eczema that primarily affects areas of the skin with a high density of oil-producing glands, like the scalp and face. It’s known for causing dandruff in adults and cradle cap in infants.
Symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis include red, scaly patches, dandruff, and greasy, swollen skin. It can be particularly stubborn, often occurring in episodes with periods of remission in between. This chronic nature can make it a frustrating condition to manage.
While the exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis isn’t known, several factors have been associated with its development. These include a yeast called Malassezia that’s present on the skin, certain medical conditions like Parkinson’s disease, and even stress. (5)
