Symptom 7: Skin Disorders
One might not immediately connect gut health to skin condition, but in Crohn’s, the skin often tells a silent story of the turmoil within. Approximately 15% of patients witness skin manifestations, making it a crucial symptom to understand and address.
Erythema nodosum, characterized by tender red nodules, is a frequent skin issue in Crohn’s sufferers. Pyoderma gangrenosum, a more severe condition, leads to painful ulcers. Both conditions are a direct result of the inflammatory processes at play in the body.
Aside from specific disorders, many with Crohn’s report general skin problems. Dryness, itchiness, or unexplained rashes can all be linked back to the disease. These issues can impact self-esteem and mental well-being, emphasizing the need for comprehensive care.
Treating the primary disease often alleviates skin symptoms. Topical treatments, moisturizers, and, in some cases, immunosuppressive drugs can be beneficial. Regular skincare routines, coupled with medical interventions, can keep skin conditions in check.
Healthy skin thrives on proper nutrition and hydration. A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, especially Vitamin E and C, can support skin health. Adequate hydration is equally vital, promoting skin elasticity and reducing dryness. (7)
