Symptom 8: Eye Problems
For Crohn’s patients, the adage “eyes are the windows to the soul” holds more truth than one might think. The eyes often mirror the inflammatory processes of the body. Recognizing and addressing eye symptoms can prevent severe complications down the line.
Uveitis, or inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, is a common concern. Symptoms include redness, pain, and blurred vision. Episcleritis, the inflammation of the white part of the eye, is another manifestation. Both conditions can be acute indicators of a Crohn’s flare-up.
The connection between the eyes and Crohn’s boils down to the body’s immune response. Inflammation in the gut can trigger an immune response that, in turn, affects the eyes. The correlation means that ocular symptoms often coincide with gastrointestinal ones.
Regular eye check-ups are crucial for those with Crohn’s. At the slightest hint of discomfort, redness, or vision changes, seeking an ophthalmologist’s opinion is paramount. Early detection can prevent complications and ensure optimal eye health. (8)
