Sign 5: Changes in the Nails
Our nails, often seen as aesthetic features, can sometimes offer insights into our health. With Sezary Syndrome, these seemingly innocuous structures can undergo pronounced changes. While not as common as other symptoms, nail anomalies can act as supporting evidence in the diagnostic journey.
These changes can range from thickening of the nails to discoloration, often yellowing. In more advanced cases, there might be ridges or even nail loss. These alterations, beyond their visual impact, can be quite discomforting.
What’s happening beneath the surface? The cancerous T-cells, in their invasive nature, can affect the nail matrix – the tissue from which the nail grows. As this matrix gets disrupted, it affects the nail’s growth pattern, leading to the observed changes.(5)
