Sign 6: Hair Loss
Hair, often tied closely with identity and self-perception, is another aspect affected by Sezary Syndrome. While hair loss or alopecia is common in various conditions, in the context of this syndrome, it’s a manifestation of the deeper turmoil happening within.
This isn’t your typical hair thinning with age. The hair loss in Sezary Syndrome can be abrupt and extensive. The underlying cause? Once again, the culprits are the cancerous T-cells. As they invade the skin, they don’t spare the scalp. This invasion disrupts the hair follicles, leading to hair shedding.
Furthermore, the constant itching and scratching, another symptom of the syndrome, can exacerbate hair loss. Continuous agitation of the scalp can damage the hair roots, accelerating the shedding.
Hair loss, beyond its physical implication, has a profound emotional and psychological impact. For many, it’s a source of distress, affecting self-esteem and social interactions. Hence, it’s not just a cosmetic concern but one that requires comprehensive care. (6)
