Fact 7: Thyroid Cancer and Genetic Syndromes – A Clear Connection
There’s a clear connection between certain genetic syndromes and an increased risk of thyroid cancer. Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, Cowden syndrome, and Familial Medullary Thyroid Cancer are some examples of these genetic conditions.
Familial Adenomatous Polyposis is an inherited disorder characterized by the development of numerous polyps in the colon and rectum. People with this condition have an increased risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer.
Similarly, Cowden syndrome, a disorder characterized by multiple noncancerous, tumor-like growths and an increased risk of certain types of cancer, has been associated with a higher risk of follicular thyroid cancer.
Familial Medullary Thyroid Cancer, as the name suggests, is characterized by a high risk of medullary thyroid cancer. The condition is inherited, and affected individuals often develop medullary thyroid cancer at a relatively young age.
