Sign 9. Changes in Mood and Behavior – The Overlooked Impact of ALS
While ALS is primarily characterized by physical symptoms, it can also lead to changes in mood and behavior in some individuals. This symptom is often overlooked, as the physical manifestations of ALS are more immediately visible and impactful. However, mood changes and behavioral shifts can significantly affect an individual’s quality of life and should be addressed with the same seriousness as physical symptoms.
These changes can be quite varied, ranging from mood swings, irritability, and depression to more severe alterations like cognitive impairment or, in rare cases, a condition called frontotemporal dementia (FTD). It’s important to note that not everyone with ALS will experience these cognitive or behavioral changes, but for those who do, it can be a challenging aspect of the disease to cope with.
Managing these symptoms often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including medical treatments like antidepressants for mood changes, counseling or psychotherapy, and strong social support systems. Support from family, friends, and ALS support groups can also play a significant role in helping individuals navigate these changes. (9)
