Symptom 5: Ear Pain: A Silent Symptom
Ear pain, also known as ‘otalgia‘, can be a surprising symptom of throat cancer. The ear and the throat are closely connected by nerves, so a problem in the throat can result in perceived pain in the ear. This is known as ‘referred pain.’
This doesn’t mean every earache is a sign of throat cancer. Ear pain can result from various conditions like ear infections, sinus infections, or even temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ). However, persistent, unexplained ear pain should not be disregarded.
The pain might be constant, or it could come and go. It could be a dull ache or a sharp, stabbing pain. If it’s accompanied by other symptoms like difficulty swallowing or voice changes, it could be a sign of throat cancer.
It’s also worth noting that the pain might be more noticeable when you swallow or move your jaw. This is because the act of swallowing or jaw movement can aggravate the throat area, further amplifying the referred ear pain. If you notice such a pattern, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. (5)
