6. Shades of Grey: Understanding Benign Thyroid Nodules
Benign thyroid nodules, also known as noncancerous nodules, account for a significant majority of all thyroid nodules. These nodules are typically harmless and do not spread to other parts of the body. However, it’s important to understand their potential effects on thyroid function and overall health.
A common type of benign thyroid nodule is a thyroid cyst, which is filled with fluid. These cysts are typically benign and may not require any treatment unless they cause discomfort or grow large. Other types of benign nodules include adenomas and thyroiditis, which are characterized by inflammation of the thyroid gland.
Even though benign nodules are noncancerous, they can sometimes cause complications. One such complication is the overproduction of thyroid hormones, leading to a condition known as toxic nodular goiter. Symptoms of this condition include unexplained weight loss, rapid heartbeat, hand tremors, and nervousness. (6)
