Cause 10: Stress and Anxiety
It’s not just a cliché when people say they ‘feel it in their gut’. The connection between our mental state and our digestive system is more profound than we might realize. Stress and anxiety can influence various bodily functions, and the gut is no exception.
When we’re stressed or anxious, our body releases stress hormones like cortisol. These hormones can speed up or slow down the digestion process, leading to either diarrhea or constipation. Rapid digestion can lead to insufficient nutrient and water absorption, thus causing diarrhea.
Our gut has its own nervous system known as the enteric nervous system, often termed the “second brain”. This system communicates with our central nervous system, and when emotional distress occurs, this communication can result in physical symptoms in the gut.
It’s essential to address the underlying stressors or anxiety-inducing factors to manage stress-related diarrhea effectively. This might involve therapy, relaxation techniques, or even medications in some cases. Additionally, paying attention to diet and avoiding foods that can exacerbate diarrhea during stressful times can help.
Our bodies have a unique way of signaling when something is amiss, and the digestive system is particularly communicative in this regard. Recognizing the links between our emotional state and physical symptoms is the first step towards holistic well-being. Whether it’s seeking mental health support or adjusting our diet, it’s all about listening to what our body—and gut—is trying to tell us. (10)
