8. Family History – Genetic Ties to Throat Cancer
Having a family history of throat cancer, or any cancer, increases the risk of developing the disease. This doesn’t mean that cancer is inherited, but some inherited genetic mutations can increase the risk.
Genes control how our cells function, including how they grow and divide. Changes in these genes can lead to abnormal cell growth and cancer.
Some people inherit these genetic changes from their parents. If your family has a history of throat cancer, it may be beneficial to speak with a genetic counselor or other health care professional about your risk.
Remember, having a family history of throat cancer does not guarantee you will get the disease. It simply means your risk is higher than someone without this history. Lifestyle choices like not smoking, avoiding excessive alcohol, eating a healthy diet, and regular check-ups can help mitigate this risk. (8)
