Disorder 8. Orthorexia Nervosa: When Healthy Eating Becomes an Obsession
Orthorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by an extreme fixation on consuming only “pure” or “healthy” foods. While striving for a healthy diet is not inherently problematic, individuals with orthorexia often take this pursuit to an unhealthy extreme, leading to rigid food restrictions and social isolation.
The physical consequences of orthorexia nervosa can include malnutrition, weight loss, and other health issues resulting from an imbalanced diet. Psychologically, individuals may experience anxiety, depression, and an obsessive focus on food and nutrition.
The causes of orthorexia nervosa are not fully understood but may involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, and support from loved ones. (8)
