Symptom 5. Dysautonomia: Irregular Heartbeat
An irregular heartbeat, also known as arrhythmia or heart palpitations, is another common symptom experienced by individuals with dysautonomia. The autonomic nervous system plays a critical role in regulating heart rate and rhythm, so when the ANS is dysfunctional, it can lead to fluctuations in heart rate or the sensation of an irregular heartbeat.
Arrhythmias can manifest in various forms, such as tachycardia (an abnormally fast heart rate), bradycardia (an abnormally slow heart rate), or atrial fibrillation (an irregular and often rapid heart rate). These irregularities can be alarming and uncomfortable for those experiencing them, and in some cases, may require medical intervention.
To manage an irregular heartbeat in dysautonomia, a healthcare provider may recommend lifestyle modifications, medications, or specialized procedures. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing caffeine intake, managing stress, and practicing relaxation techniques, can help alleviate symptoms. In more severe cases, medications like beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, or antiarrhythmic drugs may be prescribed to regulate heart rate and rhythm. In some instances, procedures such as ablation or the implantation of a pacemaker may be necessary to address more serious arrhythmias. (5)
