Symptom 7. Dysautonomia: Cognitive Dysfunction
Cognitive dysfunction, often referred to as “brain fog,” is a common symptom experienced by individuals with dysautonomia. This can manifest as difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, confusion, and impaired problem-solving abilities. The exact cause of cognitive dysfunction in dysautonomia is not entirely understood, but it is believed to be related to disruptions in blood flow to the brain, as well as the impact of chronic fatigue on cognitive function.
Managing cognitive dysfunction in dysautonomia often involves a combination of strategies aimed at improving cognitive function and addressing underlying factors. Cognitive rehabilitation exercises, such as memory games, puzzles, or computer-based training programs, can help improve cognitive abilities. In addition, addressing sleep disturbances, fatigue, and stress can have a positive impact on cognitive function. (7)
