11. Vision Problems: Seeing Through the Haze
One of the more alarming complications of SJS can be the onset of vision problems. The eyes, being lined with mucous membranes, are susceptible to the inflammatory response witnessed in SJS. Blurred vision, photophobia (sensitivity to light), and even potential blindness can manifest.
As SJS takes hold, the inflammation can affect the conjunctiva, leading to conjunctivitis. In severe cases, the cornea can get involved, leading to ulcers, scarring, and significant vision impairments.
Vision issues can drastically impact daily life. Simple tasks like reading, recognizing faces, or even navigating one’s surroundings can become monumental challenges.
Immediate ophthalmological evaluation is crucial. Depending on the severity, treatments might range from lubricating eye drops to more invasive procedures to prevent permanent damage. Regular follow-ups ensure that further complications are arrested in their tracks. (11)
