SJS doesn’t spare the gastrointestinal system. From oral ulcers making ingestion painful to inflammation along the digestive tract causing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, the toll it takes can be severe.
The same inflammatory response causing havoc on the skin and mucous membranes extends its reach to the digestive system, leading to a host of GI symptoms.
Persistent GI symptoms can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, and electrolyte imbalances. This further complicates the patient’s health, making recovery even more challenging.
Treatment strategies focus on symptom relief and ensuring adequate hydration and nutrition. In severe cases, hospitalization might be necessary, with intravenous fluids and nutritional support taking precedence. (12)
