One of the pivotal symptoms of SJS is the eruption within the mucous membranes. This primarily affects areas like the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals. These eruptions, though less visible compared to skin rashes, can be excruciatingly painful.
The erosions and blistering on the mucous membranes result from the body’s misguided immune response. Cells within these membranes undergo necrosis, leading to painful ulcers and making everyday tasks, like eating or blinking, agonizing.
The consequences of these eruptions can be severe. For instance, oral ulcers can hinder intake, potentially leading to malnutrition or dehydration. Genital ulcers, on the other hand, can pose complications for urinary functions. (7)
