Method 9: Avoid Spicy and Acidic Foods
Diet plays a significant role in our overall health, and this extends to the well-being of our oral cavity. Certain foods, especially those that are spicy or acidic, can aggravate mouth ulcers. They might not be the root cause, but they certainly can exacerbate the pain and prolong the healing process.
Spicy foods contain capsaicin, an irritant that can cause a stinging sensation when it comes into contact with an open sore. Acidic foods, on the other hand, can erode the protective mucous layer in the mouth, making ulcers more susceptible to external irritants. Every bite into a spicy taco or a sip of citrusy juice can feel like pouring salt on a wound, causing immense discomfort.
During the period of healing, it’s advisable to modify one’s diet. Opt for bland, soft foods that require minimal chewing. This reduces friction against the ulcer. Dairy products can be particularly soothing, as they neutralize the acids in the mouth. Oatmeal, mashed potatoes, yogurt, and cottage cheese are excellent choices during this period.
Once the ulcer begins to heal, resist the temptation to dive back into a plate of spicy wings or a glass of orange juice. Gradually reintroduce potentially irritating foods to ensure the ulcer doesn’t get aggravated again. It’s all about balance and listening to your body’s cues. (9)
