5. Fainting Spells – The Bewildering Fall in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Fainting spells, scientifically known as syncope, are another concerning symptom of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. While a fainting spell in isolation can result from various factors like dehydration or low blood sugar, repeated episodes could indicate an underlying heart condition such as HCM.
HCM-related syncope typically occurs during or immediately after physical exertion. Why so?
As we know, HCM causes the heart muscle to thicken, which can obstruct blood flow out of the heart. During physical activities, the body’s demand for blood and oxygen increases. However, the obstructed blood flow due to HCM can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure and, subsequently, fainting.
Repeated fainting or near-fainting episodes can significantly impact a person’s life. The unpredictability of the fainting spells can lead to fear, anxiety, and limitations in physical and social activities. More critically, if left unattended, these fainting spells can lead to serious injuries or accidents.
In the grand scheme of HCM, recognizing and addressing fainting spells is crucial. It is a sign that the body isn’t getting the blood supply it needs and is often associated with a higher risk of life-threatening arrhythmias or sudden cardiac death. Therefore, if you or someone you know experiences unexplained fainting spells, seek immediate medical help. (5)
