7. Electric Shock Sensation: A Jarring Warning
Lhermitte’s sign, a hallmark of myelopathy, is described by many as feeling like an electric shock traveling down the spine. Unlike some other symptoms, which gradually onset, this sensation is abrupt and alarming.
What’s happening here is a sudden flexion, or bending, of the neck. This action can momentarily compress the spinal cord, leading to this jolting sensation.
It’s the body’s way of signaling that something is not right. While not everyone with myelopathy will experience Lhermitte’s sign, those who do should see it as a pressing reason to seek medical attention. (7)
