9. Blood Clots: The Unexpected Link
Our blood possesses a remarkable ability to clot, preventing excessive bleeding when we’re injured. However, when clots form unexpectedly without an apparent reason, it becomes a potential health concern.
Cancer, including PDAC, can increase the likelihood of blood clotting. Specific proteins released by cancer cells, coupled with the body’s inflammatory response to the tumor, can elevate the risk of clot formation. These clots can manifest in deep veins, often in the legs, leading to conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Symptoms of DVT include swelling, pain, warmth, and redness in the affected limb. If a piece of the clot breaks off, it can travel to the lungs, causing a life-threatening condition known as a pulmonary embolism. This condition can present with chest pain, shortness of breath, and sudden coughing.(9)
