An occasional bloated feeling post a hearty meal might seem like the norm for many. However, when that bloatedness persists, it’s cause for concern, especially in the shadow of advanced colorectal cancer.
The swelling or ascites, as it’s medically termed, arises from the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. Multiple factors contribute to this: liver metastasis leading to obstructed blood flow, the tumor’s pressure causing lymphatic drainage issues, or direct secretion from the tumor.
What starts as a slight discomfort can escalate to visible abdominal distention. This swelling not only brings discomfort but can also exacerbate other symptoms like shortness of breath by pressing against the diaphragm. (9)
