6. Fatigue: When Tiredness Takes Over
Fatigue in the context of transverse myelitis isn’t just about feeling tired after a long day. It’s an overwhelming, persistent exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest, dramatically impacting daily life.
While the exact mechanisms behind fatigue in transverse myelitis patients aren’t fully understood, the body’s constant battle against inflammation, coupled with disrupted nerve signals, is believed to be a significant contributor. Additionally, other symptoms, like pain and muscle weakness, can exacerbate feelings of fatigue.
Managing fatigue requires a multi-pronged approach. Apart from medical interventions, patients benefit from pacing themselves, setting realistic daily goals, and incorporating relaxation techniques. Occupational therapy can also provide strategies to optimize energy expenditure throughout the day. (6)
