Symptom 7: Sleep Disturbances
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome can also cause sleep disturbances, another symptom that can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. They might struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, or they might experience changes in their sleep patterns, such as sleeping more during the day and less at night.
Sleep disturbances can exacerbate other symptoms of WKS, such as confusion and memory problems. Lack of proper sleep can also affect mood and cognitive function, potentially leading to increased irritability, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating.
These sleep disturbances might initially be written off as insomnia or other sleep disorders. However, when seen in conjunction with other symptoms of WKS, especially in those with a history of alcohol misuse or malnutrition, they could point towards the syndrome.
