10. Sensitivity to Sunlight: An Unexpected Consequence of Contact Dermatitis
Some individuals affected by contact dermatitis may develop increased sensitivity to sunlight, also known as photosensitivity. This sensitivity can cause the skin to become more susceptible to sunburn, even with relatively short periods of sun exposure.
The exact mechanism behind this increased sensitivity is not fully understood, but it may be related to the inflammation and damage caused by the contact dermatitis itself. As the skin’s protective barrier becomes compromised, it may lose some of its natural ability to filter out harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
To protect the skin and minimize the risk of sunburn, it is essential to practice sun safety measures, such as wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30, seeking shade when the sun is strongest, and wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses. Additionally, avoiding known irritants and allergens can help prevent further episodes of contact dermatitis and reduce the risk of developing photosensitivity. (10)
