13. The Burden of Chronic Infections in Cystic Fibrosis
Chronic lung infections are a significant burden for individuals with Cystic Fibrosis. These infections are a major cause of morbidity and contribute to the progressive nature of the disease.
The thick mucus in CF patients’ lungs creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth. This leads to frequent and persistent lung infections, which can be difficult to treat and clear.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common bacterium causing infections in CF patients. These infections are particularly challenging due to their resistance to many antibiotics. Managing these infections requires a comprehensive approach, including aggressive antibiotic therapy.
Regular monitoring of lung function and microbial cultures is vital. This helps in early identification and treatment of infections, reducing their impact on lung health. (13)
