Symptom 9: Renal Failure – When Kidneys Cry for Help
Renal failure, also known as kidney failure, is a severe and life-threatening symptom of cystinosis. Over time, the relentless buildup of cystine crystals in the kidney cells causes extensive damage, leading to the loss of kidney function.
As the kidneys lose their ability to filter out waste products and excess fluid from the blood, toxins start to build up in the body. This condition, known as uremia, can cause a variety of symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, and mental confusion.
The progression to renal failure in cystinosis patients often leads to the need for dialysis or a kidney transplant. Both of these treatment options can be lifesaving but come with their own sets of challenges.
Renal failure is an alarming reminder of the seriousness of cystinosis. Timely diagnosis, consistent treatment, and regular monitoring of kidney function are paramount in managing this symptom and improving the quality of life for cystinosis patients. (9)
