5. Dizziness and Weakness – Neurological Concerns
Patients with DIC may experience dizziness and weakness, symptoms that are often overlooked but are significant. These can be due to the reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood as a result of anemia, a common consequence of chronic bleeding in DIC.
The dizziness and weakness in DIC can be attributed to several factors, including anemia, blood clots disrupting blood flow to the brain, or even microbleeds within the brain.
These symptoms are critical as they can indicate worsening of the condition or the onset of new complications. They require prompt evaluation to determine their cause and extent.
Management involves ensuring adequate oxygenation and blood flow to the brain. This may include transfusions or other treatments to address anemia and careful monitoring of neurological status. (5)
