6. Shortness of Breath – A Respiratory Red Flag
Shortness of breath is a significant symptom in DIC, often indicating serious underlying complications. This symptom can arise suddenly and requires immediate attention.
The shortness of breath in DIC can be due to multiple factors, such as small clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) or bleeding into lung tissues. These conditions impair the lungs’ ability to provide oxygen to the body.
This respiratory symptom is particularly alarming as it can quickly escalate to more severe conditions, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It’s a sign that the DIC is affecting major organ systems.
Treatment involves stabilizing the patient’s breathing, often requiring oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation in severe cases. Simultaneously, the underlying DIC and its cause must be addressed to prevent further lung damage. (6)
