Symptom 5: Double Vision or Blurred Vision
Problems with vision, notably double vision or blurred vision, often arise in cases of Encephalitis Lethargica. This symptom can add a layer of difficulty to performing daily tasks and can also serve as a signal of this rare condition.
Double vision, also known as diplopia, is when two images of a single object are perceived. It can be incredibly disorienting, making it hard to read, drive, or even walk. This may lead to nausea, dizziness, and headaches due to the strain on the eyes and the brain’s struggle to merge the images into one.
Blurred vision, another frequent visual disturbance, can also make it hard to see clearly. This could manifest as foggy visuals or indistinct shapes and colors. Activities that require sharp vision, such as reading small print or recognizing faces, might become challenging.
In severe cases, these vision issues can affect the person’s balance and coordination. They might stumble, knock things over, or have difficulty navigating their surroundings. This can lead to accidents or injuries, further complicating the person’s situation. (5)
