Symptom 8: Flu-Like Symptoms
In the early stages of Encephalitis Lethargica, flu-like symptoms are common. These can include fever, sore throat, headache, and muscle pains. Because of their resemblance to common ailments, these symptoms can easily be overlooked or misdiagnosed.
Fever, often one of the first signs, may be mild or high. The affected individual may experience chills and night sweats along with the elevated body temperature. This can disrupt sleep, further exacerbating fatigue and other symptoms.
Headaches, usually described as a persistent, dull ache, may accompany the fever. These headaches can range from mildly irritating to debilitating, often resisting common painkillers and exacerbating the feeling of fatigue and malaise.
Sore throat and muscle pains add to the overall feeling of being unwell. The individual may feel a scratchy sensation in their throat and experience general body aches, further mimicking the symptoms of a flu.
While these symptoms might initially be dismissed as a common illness, they play a crucial role in early detection of Encephalitis Lethargica, potentially allowing for timely treatment and better outcomes. (8)
