3. Gastrointestinal Issues: A Disruptive Element
Many individuals with Fabry disease experience gastrointestinal symptoms, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. These issues can be both disruptive and uncomfortable, impacting daily life and overall well-being. The gastrointestinal symptoms in Fabry disease are believed to be caused by Gb3 accumulation in the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract, leading to inflammation and impaired function.
To manage these symptoms, patients may be advised to modify their diet, increase their fluid intake, and use over-the-counter medications for symptom relief. In some cases, enzyme replacement therapy may also help improve gastrointestinal function and alleviate symptoms. (3)
