Symptom 7. Menstrual Changes: Unpredictable Cycles
Thyroid hormones are heavily involved in regulating the menstrual cycle, and any disruption in their production can lead to menstrual irregularities. Women with Hashimoto’s disease may notice changes in their menstrual cycles, including heavier or lighter periods, irregular periods, or even missed periods.
Heavier periods are usually one of the first signs of an underactive thyroid. They can be more painful and last longer than usual. On the other hand, as the disease progresses and hormone levels drop further, periods may become lighter and less frequent.
These menstrual changes can be disconcerting and, in some cases, may affect a woman’s fertility. In addition, irregular periods can sometimes lead to other health problems such as anemia, so it’s essential to discuss any menstrual changes with a healthcare provider.(7)
