8. Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: A Rare Liver Disease
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare, chronic liver disease characterized by inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts. This scarring can block bile flow, leading to liver damage, cirrhosis, and eventually liver failure.
The exact cause of PSC is not well understood, but it is thought to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. PSC is often associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly ulcerative colitis.
There is currently no cure for PSC, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and complications. In some cases, a liver transplant may be necessary if the disease progresses to liver failure.
If you have been diagnosed with IBD or suspect you may have PSC, consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate evaluation and management. (8)
