Fact 14: Dementia is not a Normal Part of Aging
A common misconception about dementia is the belief that it’s merely a normal part of aging. This belief is far from the truth and can lead to delayed diagnoses and treatments. It’s true that the risk of dementia increases with age, but dementia is not a condition that everyone will experience as they grow older.
Dementia is characterized by a set of symptoms resulting from conditions or illnesses that cause damage to brain cells. This damage affects the cells’ ability to communicate with each other, which in turn influences thinking, behavior, and feelings. Normal aging may bring about some forgetfulness, but dementia involves a significant decline in memory and cognitive function that interferes with a person’s everyday life. (14)
