As MODS progresses, hematological dysfunction can come into play, leading to problems with the body’s clotting and bleeding mechanisms. This dysfunction can manifest as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), where the body forms blood clots throughout the blood vessels, blocking blood flow and leading to organ damage.

Hematological dysfunction may not always present with overt signs. It is often recognized through laboratory tests showing abnormal clotting times, decreased platelet count, and the presence of fibrin degradation products. In severe cases, patients may present with spontaneous bleeding or bruising.

Hematological dysfunction can have dire consequences. Blood clots formed during DIC can block blood vessels, leading to tissue death and organ damage. On the other hand, the overuse of clotting factors can lead to a risk of severe bleeding, making any surgical intervention riskier. (8)
