Fact 8. The Need for Further Research in MSA
As with any complex disorder, understanding and effectively treating MSA necessitates ongoing research. Despite the strides made in recent years, much about MSA remains a mystery. More research is needed to uncover its causes, develop reliable diagnostic tests, and discover effective treatments.
One area that holds promise is genetic research. Although MSA is not typically inherited, studying the genetic profiles of individuals with MSA may shed light on potential genetic risk factors. This, in turn, could provide clues to the underlying mechanisms of the disease and guide the development of new treatment approaches.
Another crucial area of research is in developing disease-modifying therapies. These are treatments that could slow or stop the progression of MSA, rather than just managing the symptoms. This is the holy grail of research for any neurodegenerative disorder, and it’s no different for MSA. (8)
