In the later stages of MSA, patients often encounter breathing problems. These difficulties may appear as shortness of breath, especially during physical activity, or trouble breathing when lying down, known as orthopnea.

The onset of breathing difficulties is usually gradual, beginning with mild breathlessness during strenuous activity, progressing to noticeable discomfort during everyday tasks. As MSA affects the autonomic control of breathing, patients may find themselves gasping for breath even during rest or sleep, leading to frequent awakenings and poor sleep quality.

This impact on sleep isn’t merely inconvenient; it can significantly affect a patient’s well-being. Lack of quality sleep can lead to daytime fatigue, mood changes, and a decrease in cognitive functions such as attention and memory. Moreover, it can exacerbate the physical symptoms of MSA, making daily tasks even more challenging.

Orthopnea, another breathing issue experienced by MSA patients, can be particularly distressing. The inability to breathe comfortably while lying down can lead to sleep disturbances and extreme discomfort, further impairing a patient’s quality of life. (8)
