A relentless thirst and an increase in the frequency of urination are common symptoms of PHPT, often due to the body’s attempt to manage the high levels of calcium in the blood. The kidneys work overtime to filter out the excess calcium, leading to polyuria (increased urine output) and subsequent polydipsia (increased thirst).

This symptom can be particularly disruptive to daily life, affecting sleep due to nocturia (the need to urinate during the night) and resulting in dehydration if fluid intake isn’t sufficiently increased.

Management of these symptoms is two-pronged: ensuring adequate hydration while also medically addressing the hypercalcemia. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help the kidneys excrete more calcium. In severe cases, surgery to address the overactive parathyroid glands is the most effective treatment.

It’s important for individuals to monitor their fluid intake and be aware of the signs of dehydration, which can exacerbate other symptoms of PHPT. (10)
