Symptom 2: Vivid, Action-Filled, or Terrifying Dreams
Moving on to the second symptom of RBD, we encounter an element that amplifies the complexity of this disorder – vivid, action-filled, or terrifying dreams. The dream content of people with RBD differs significantly from that of typical dreamers. It’s not filled with the usual randomness or bizarre plots. Instead, it’s marked by intensity, fear, and often, violence.
Dreams are the theatre of the mind, and in the case of RBD, the plays staged are more action thriller than tranquil drama. People with RBD report dreams that are filled with action, often involving them being chased, attacked, or forced to defend themselves.
These dreams are not just visually vivid but also pack a hefty emotional punch. The fear and anxiety that these terrifying dreams induce can leave a person feeling distressed and anxious, even long after they’ve woken up.
The relationship between dream content and physical activity in RBD creates a vicious cycle. The terrifying nature of the dreams can fuel more intense physical activity, which in turn, can lead to more vivid and terrifying dreams. (2)
